Before deciding to get the 3G iPad, my worries are the price and the 3G capabilities. iPad is using a microSIM which is not yet available in the Philippines when it was released. Luckily, people at Globe have come up with an iPad plan which includes an unlimited data plan and uses microSIM for Php 999 (lock-in period 1 year).

I was about to sign up for it and cancel my super surf on my phone however, I wanted to check other networks first as my Globe tattoo is not working well in my area. I have wifi at home but I needed it for mobile use and emergency.

My concern in using 3G network from other Telcos falls on the SIM. They are using the regular SIM which will not work on iPad unless… You cut it.

Oh yes… Cut the edge of it to the size of the micro SIM. I was told about this by Sir Nico but haven’t tried it yet. I tried researching for it and was surprised that a lot have tried it and it actually worked! So I decided to try it on a SUN Broadband SIM as I was hearing that the connection was pretty good. We’ll see…

Here’s what I’ve done:

1. I used the included AT&T microSIM in the iPad.

2. The materials I’ve used.

3. SUN Broadband wireless SIM

4. I’ve aligned the AT&T SIM to the Sun SIM and cut the edges of the markings.

5. Try the SIM on the trayand check if there’s a need to trim off the edges.

6. Voila! Customized Micro SIM!

7. Insert the SIM tray into the slot. The iPad detected the SIM right away with the 3G connection.

8. Change the APN to “minternet”. There are some instances that it will just right away work without it but in my case, I needed to try it.

9. Tried Safari and…. Instant 3G connection!

Oh well, contrary to my belief… SUN’s 3G connection in my area is poor! Will try to cut other SIM to test…
