The first time I saw the first collection of Raf Simons for Christian Dior, I was actually speechless and not in a good way. I needed some moment to absorb and grasp the thought process of showing the pieces in a private residence on the Avenue d’Iena which was transformed in an Enchanted Garden covered with beautiful and colorful flowers wall to wall.

However, I remember the news that I read when Dior was looking for someone to replace Galliano and they wanted to change the face and look of Dior. And when I first heard of the new person they’ve chosen to do it, I was also shocked that they’ve picked Raf Simons who is used to designing a men’s line aside from his stint in Jil Sander.

I am always fascinated in watching Dior Couture show because of its over the top pieces done by Galliano. Amazement and admiration is what I normally feel scanning through the online photos for those who showcased the show. He execute the clothes extravagantly that even a simple dress would look flamboyant due to styling.
What Raf Simons did is a 360 degrees turn and went back to the state where Christian Dior himself started his first collection for the house showing his remarkable aesthetic.

The clothes are clean, tailored, not exaggerated except for the peplum skirts on top of a slim pants. Color palette of the collection is neutral in black, gray and navy although there are some bright colors like the yellow long sleeves gown which I love.

Like I said, I needed some time to think. I can’t say I love the collection but I like it. It’s a fresh take of a new life for Dior. I think Raf Simons did the right decision in taking that route and he doesn’t disappoint. With Anna Wintour, Alber Elbaz, Donatella Versace, Marc Jacobs, Diane Von Fursternberg and Carine Roitfeld on the front row, its better be worth their time.
Check out the entire collection:
